Even, negative, or positive — which strategy?
Even splits run the same pace start to finish — the safest default for most races. Negative splits start a little conservative and finish faster, which is how most well-executed marathons and half marathons are actually run. Positive splits start fast and fade — useful to see modeled out, but rarely the goal on race day.
How to use the splits
Write the cumulative times on your arm, a wristband, or your watch lap alerts. The goal isn't to hit every split exactly — it's to know by mile 3 whether you're on pace, ahead, or need to adjust before it's too late to matter.
